As someone not very familiar with Japanese entertainment,do these types of ranking bearing any importance to the artist/celebrity?

I'm amazed Shun Oguri is not part of this list... :/
The list of actresses tells a lot about the low quality of Japanese actresses. They obviously are more interested in young/'cute' actresses/idols than in talented ones... Very sad! I wish talented actressed were given more interesting/deep roles.

@Evelyn: These rankings usually serve as a point of reference for sponsors, movie companies, ad agencies and TV stations when they want to find out who are the more popular celebrities and hire them to do CMs, dramas, movies etc. Although I don't think this is fully reflective of any artiste's true popularity, I think such rankings done by research companies like Video Research do have some significance in the industry.

@Anonymous: Well, this is essentially a popularity ranking rather than one which says who is good at their trade of acting/singing/hosting etc. Sometimes you got to admit it, an actor/actress who is good at acting but may not rank so long on the popularity charts still face a hurdle to getting jobs as the popular ones because sponsors, movie companies and TV companies still want the best value for their buck.

I must admit that you're right, Chiaki. But I find it very sad. :( Fortunately, Fall's ratings show that popular/'cute' actors/actresses are not enough to sell a drama, as many series are going down.
A good script AND good actors/actresses are the key! I hope the 'market' will change...

@anonymous i know i'm replying very late and this post was last year. But i just wanted to point out that Amami Yuki is definitely not young and what defines cute for this generation and yet she ranked third. That's because she's an amazing actress and she worked her butt off to reach that position. I just hope you do not generalize. :) No hard feelings. Just saying. :)
