Tanihara Shosuke makes his debut in NHK cooking show

Tanihara Shosuke will make his debut in a cooking show when he begins hosting a new corner in NHK's longtime cooking programme "Kyou no Ryouri". He is scheduled to host a new corner titled "Tanihara Shosuke no The Otoko no Shokusai" which will be aired every third Thursday of the month at 9pm. "Kyou no Ryouri" holds the title of longest running cooking show in Japan as it has been around for 56 years. In the new corner, Tanihara will interview guest chefs about tips on cooking and advice on how to create dishes.

Tanihara was offered this assignment when he appeared in the programme on 19 December last year to demonstrate how to cook his dishes. This made the production crew realise that Tanihara is good at cooking and  they decided to get him to appear as a regular host on the show. Tanihara who records the programme every day to watch, was thrilled and honoured by the offer so he accepted the job immediately.

In recent years, there have been a number of male celebrities roped in to host cooking programmes such as Hayami Mokomichi who appears in NTV's morning programme "ZIP" and V6's Sakamoto Masayuki who appears in FujiTV's "Non-stop!". In particular, Hayami even released merchandise such as his own brand of olive oil and had won the Gourmand Cooking Book award last month in Paris.

Tanihara commented that he started being interested in cooking while working in a 2006 stage play "Aware Kanojo wa Shoufu" where he had to lose 8 kg for his role. As he is a big eater, he wanted to explore ways to eat his normal amount of food while trying to lose weight so he started cooking with the calories in mind. As for now, he tries to cook for his wife and 5 kids whenever he has the time and feels happy to see them enjoying his creations.
